T-Mobile's New Data Plans Include Smartphone Tethering Option

T-Mobile's New Data Plans Include

Smartphone Tethering Option

T-Mobile introduced revised pricing for its data services today, including a $10 entry-level option and (limited) smartphone tethering for the first time.

Now that T-Mobile is boosting its 3G network to HSPA+ technology, it is finally offering the tethering service that so many smartphone users have longed for. T-Mobile now has two different data plans, with the tethering option available as an add on.

The first data plan is called the "Web - 200MB Plan" and it offers 200MB of data for $10 per month -- if you're willing to sign a contract. In an interesting twist, T-Mobile is also offering 200MB for $15 per month with no contractual obligation. The assumption is that for those who wish to extend an existing contract on a month-to-month basis, they can switch to the $15 plan if they want.

Here is a quick video tour of the Motorola Droid X, the newest Android handset for Verizon Wireless.

When customers consume 90% or 180MB of data in a given bill cycle, they’ll receive a text message from T-Mobile advising them they are nearing their monthly threshold. At the 200MB threshold, they are sent a similar message and are charged $0.10 per MB up to a maximum of $40 total, including the Web – 200MB plan fee. If the customer is on a family plan, the primary account holder will also receive an SMS warning.

The second data plan is called the "Web - Unlimited Plan" and, as the name implies, offers customers unlimited mobile broadband for $30 per month. Rather than slap users with overage charges for abusing the network, T-Mobile said it will throttle users who surpass 5GB per month. That means heavy users will still have access, but at dramatically slower speeds.

Select smartphone owners will have the option to add the "Tethering and Wi-Fi Sharing Service Plan" for an additional $15 per month. This is among the lowest additional monthly charges for tethering and Wi-Fi sharing in the industry. Verizon Wireless, for example, charges an additional $30 per month for tethering, and AT&T charges an additional $20.

The bummer is that not all of T-Mobile's smartphones offer tethering.

When the service goes live later this year, it will be accessible from the T-Mobile myTouch 4G, the LG Optimus T, and the T-Mobile Comet. Android 2.2 is required. Later, tethering and Wi-Fi sharing will be enabled on the T-Mobile G2 via a software update, but T-Mobile wouldn't say when. The G2 also runs Android 2.2.

The G2 and myTouch 4G both are capable of using T-Mobile's HSPA+ network, which can hit download speeds up to 21Mbps at theoretical peak.

T-Mobile didn't say if or when non-Android handsets would have tethering capabilities.
